The government has launched a two-day nationwide campaign from today to provide free Vitamin A capsules and deworming medicine to children across the country, targeting millions of young children.
Under the campaign, children aged six to 59 months are being given Vitamin A capsules, while deworming medicine is being administered to children between one and five years of age.
According to Leela Bikram Thapa, Chief of the Nutrition Section at the Department of Health Services, approximately 2.1 million children are expected to receive Vitamin A capsules and around two million children deworming medicine during the campaign.
The government has mobilized 52,000 female community health volunteers and 10,000 health workers to carry out the nationwide programme. Thapa has urged parents and guardians to take their eligible children to the nearest distribution centres to receive the capsules and medicine.
Nepal conducts the Vitamin A and deworming campaign twice a year, generally in Baisakh (mid-April to mid-May) and Kartik (mid-October to mid-November). The programme aims to reduce the risk of vitamin A deficiency, intestinal worm infections and related health complications among children.
The nationwide Vitamin A supplementation programme has been running since 2050 BS, while the deworming campaign was introduced in 2056 BS. The twice-yearly distribution is part of the government's efforts to improve child nutrition and protect young children from preventable health problems.
