The rescue of Chinese national Lu Haitao, who survived nearly 10 days trapped inside a tunnel following the devastating Bhotekoshi disaster, has emerged as more than a remarkable story of survival. It has become a powerful example of humanitarian solidarity between Nepal and China at a time of profound crisis.

Lu was rescued alive from a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project in Rasuwa, nearly 10 days after he became trapped underground. His survival and eventual rescue drew widespread public and media attention, providing a rare moment of hope amid the destruction and loss caused by the disaster.

His rescue also underscored the extraordinary determination of the teams involved in the operation and the lengths to which rescuers can go to save a human life, even under extremely difficult conditions.

A rescue with a wider meaning

For China, the rescue of one of its citizens in Nepal carried particular significance. But beyond the individual rescue, the operation also highlighted the humanitarian dimension of Nepal-China relations and the importance of mutual support when either country faces a major crisis.

As Nepali rescue teams worked to bring Lu to safety, China was simultaneously extending emergency assistance to Nepal in response to the disaster.

At the request of the Government of Nepal, China’s Ministry of Emergency Management dispatched five technical experts with specialised tunnel-rescue expertise to support Nepal’s search and rescue operations.

China also delivered approximately 50 tonnes of emergency relief supplies to Nepal using two Y-20 military transport aircraft. More than 13,000 emergency items, including tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food and first-aid materials, were provided to support rescue operations and affected communities.

The assistance went beyond immediate relief supplies. China also provided drones, DNA-testing equipment and water-purification systems, strengthening Nepal’s capacity for search and rescue, identification and emergency response. Additional humanitarian and financial assistance was also extended for relief and rehabilitation efforts.

More than an individual rescue

Taken together, the rescue of Lu and China’s assistance to Nepal tell a story larger than any single operation.

A Chinese citizen was brought safely out of a disaster zone in Nepal, while China provided technical expertise, emergency equipment, relief supplies and humanitarian support to Nepal during one of its most difficult moments.

The episode has therefore brought the human dimension of Nepal-China relations into sharper focus.

The relationship between the two countries is often discussed in terms of infrastructure, trade, investment, connectivity and development cooperation. Yet disasters reveal another, equally important side of bilateral ties - the ability of countries to stand beside one another when human lives are at stake.

Hope amid devastation

Such acts of cooperation carry particular weight during disasters, when communities are confronted with loss, uncertainty and fear. A successful rescue can restore hope, while international assistance can provide both practical support and a sense of solidarity.

Lu’s survival after nearly 10 days underground is therefore more than a dramatic rescue story. It is a reminder of the determination required to preserve human life in the most challenging circumstances.

It also demonstrates that friendship between nations is measured not only through diplomatic statements and formal agreements, but through concrete action when people need help most.

The Bhotekoshi disaster has caused immense loss and suffering. But amid the destruction have also emerged stories of courage, cooperation and humanity.

Disasters may know no borders, and humanitarian solidarity should know none either. In the difficult days following the Bhotekoshi disaster, Nepal-China friendship has been reflected not only through words, but through rescue efforts, emergency assistance and a shared commitment to saving lives.
