The Birgunj Customs Office collected Rs 26.73 billion in revenue in Ashoj, exceeding its monthly target by 1.02% as imports and economic activity picked up during the festive season.

The office had set a revenue collection target of Rs 26.46 billion for the month. Chief Customs Administrator Krishna Prasad Mainali said the office exceeded the target amid increased economic activity during the festive period. The monthly collection was Rs 270 million higher than the target, reflecting a stronger revenue performance during the month.

Fuel Imports Generate Highest Revenue
Fuel imports contributed the largest share of revenue among the major import categories, generating Rs 2.29 billion in Ashoj. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports generated another Rs 1.8 billion, while bitumen imports contributed Rs 1.4 billion.

Imports of apples and pears generated Rs 500 million in revenue during the month. The figures highlight the contribution of petroleum products and other imported goods to customs revenue collected through one of Nepal’s major trade gateways.

Three-Month Revenue Collection Falls Short of Target
Despite exceeding its monthly target, the Birgunj Customs Office remained below its cumulative revenue target for the first three months of the current fiscal year.

By the end of Ashoj, the office had collected Rs 69.13 billion against a target of Rs 70.56 billion, leaving a shortfall of Rs 1.43 billion. The cumulative collection represented approximately 97.97% of the target, indicating that the office had achieved most, but not all, of its planned revenue collection.

The contrast between the monthly surplus and the cumulative shortfall suggests that stronger collections in Ashoj were not sufficient to fully offset the gap from the earlier months.

As a major customs point for Nepal’s trade with India and other markets, Birgunj plays an important role in mobilising government revenue. Its monthly and cumulative collection figures provide an indication of import activity and the performance of customs-based revenue mobilisation.
